You may not have considered it, but log building is as much an art as say painting or cooking. Anyone can paint something, but not everyone has the talent to build an envious infrastructure with the help of a few logs. Constructing your very own handcrafted log cabin or working on a log building project is bound to give you a new level of satisfaction.
People who are into this craft know how much effort, blood, sweat, and tears go into building a structure that is made up of logs or timbers for themselves or others. Regardless of the purpose, the result can be spectacular.

Types of Logs Used in Building Homes

The grain of the wood or color may or may not be a factor when considering which log to choose for building a house or a log cabin. Grain and color may lend a certain aesthetic to the look and feel of the house but what really matters is the log’s performance in regards to the house. They should be durable and tough so that they can meet challenges such as natural disasters and harsh weather conditions head on without failure.

Some species of wood that can be used for log building are:

1.Pine – Pine is an excellent choice for log building because of its high tensile strength and its innate ability to remain straight and true. There are several types of pine wood that you can choose from such as white and red pine, ponderosa or lodgepole to name a few. Pine is used the most for log building because of the it is so plentiful and can be found in abundance almost everywhere on the planet. Also, it is significantly less expensive than other species of wood.

2.Spruce – Spruce is a wood species that is native to New England, although it is available in the South and Midwest too. This wood is lighter and softer in color as well as its weight. It comes with its own set of recommendations for log building.

3.Douglas Fir – The tones of the Douglas Fir vary according to its age. It may be between the shades of red and yellow. They tend to grow to impressive, majestic heights and diameters. This species tends to be on the higher end of the price range.. However, the high density of this wood makes it the perfect choice for structural applications.

The other types of wood used for log building also include cedar, cypress, and oak and are equally recommended for structural purposes.

The Necessity of Log Building Safety Apparel

Log building safety apparel is something that you can absolutely not do without if you are considering starting your very own log building project. They are a smart choice to avoid risks and hazards that are inherent in log building and logging. The apparel includes protective pants and chaps, lumberjack hardhats, shirts and log building leather safety boots. However, care must also be taken to ensure you buy quality apparel that can withstand the rigors of the log building and logging industry. It does not make sense to skimp when it comes to safety equipment.  With this in mind, you cannot go wrong in buying your log building apparel from Kings Bridge Supply.
